Tour croppedThe San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden will be holding its 2017 Docent training program starting September 27, 2017. The training series will be held for four consecutive Wednesdays, September 27, October 4, October 11, and October 18 from 9:30AM to 11:30AM. Training will cover a range of topics for leading tours for students and the general public.

If you have an interest in the environment, sustainability and biodiversity; want to learn more about plants and gardening on the Central Coast; and enjoy watching a spark of inspiration catch hold in kids; then we want YOU at the Docent Training! Children’s Docents lead garden tours for schools and other children’s groups and conduct hands-on activities that connect children to plants.

The mission of the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden is to connect people and plants, and our Garden Docents play a crucial role linking people of all ages to our budding Garden. No prior experience or knowledge is necessary, just a desire to learn and share!

The basic requirements for Docents include:

  1. A desire to encourage interest in the natural world.
  2. Must attend all training dates (reasonable exceptions will be accommodated)
  3. Be available to conduct two tours (occasionally more) per month. Most tours occur during weekdays; occasionally they fall on weekends or may be part of special event.
  4. Actively monitor email requests for tours and respond to them promptly.
  5. Attend occasional activities at the Garden that provide background information about plants and the Garden to strengthen your role as a Docent.

Training sessions will start in the Oak Glen Pavilion at the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden.

Fee: $20 covers materials; pre-registration and completion of all four classes is required.

Scholarships are available for Educational Interns; call 805.541.1400×303 or email education@slobg.org for details and registration.
