DESCRIPTION:This class is taught by SLO County Citizens’ Education. It’s ‘Single Use Plastics 101″ – for everyone. We’re also calling it ‘Trash Talk’\, because that’s where most of our plastics end up – in landfills. \nPlastic is choking our biosphere\, contaminating the food and water supplies of all living things\, and driving climate change. Media outlets are exploding with information and disinformation about plastic: how it is made; what happens to it after use; effects on our planet and on human health. The topic of plastic is extensive and our knowledge about the deleterious effects on human health expanding. \nThe focus of the 45-minute workshop\, Single Use Plastics 101\, is designed to inform and support consumers to reduce their single use plastic consumption. The workshop supports participants in understanding: \n\nWhy single use plastics are so harmful\nGreenwashing and recycling\nMicroplastics and microplastic pollution\nHealth effects from microplastics\nSingle use plastics and climate change\nWhat actions we all can take to reduce single use plastics\n\nParticipants will receive SLO County Citizens’ Climate Education informational documents to supplement their understanding and carry the message home. \nThis will be taught by Kathleen Bond of the SLO County Citizens’ Climate Education (CCE) organization\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. This trail is moderately strenuous and steep\, and you may want to bring your hiking poles. Information about both year-round residents and seasonally overwintering raptors are included. \nIn addition to the lecture\, you can sign up separately to join on a walking raptor field trip at the SLO Botanical Garden and El Chorro Regional Park (2 hours) on March 8th immediately following the lecture. SUMMARY:Mushroom Discovery Two-Day Workshop: Exploration and Identification
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Mushroom Discovery series\, this hands-on and experiential learning program will happen over two days:\nSaturday\, February 8th from 10am to 4pm and Sunday\, February 9th 2025\, from 10am to 4pm.\nDoors open at 9:30 – please plan to arrive on-time for these two full days of learning. \nThe course will begin in the classroom with Christian teaching the basics of mushrooms and mushroom identification. Then the class will move outside through a portion of the SLO Botanical Garden. Tips and instructions on collecting mushrooms will be given. Participants will gather specimens for closer examination and discuss identification techniques and citizen science tools. This workshop will emphasize a dynamic sensory awareness of the mushrooms via close observation\, touching\, and smelling. \nThe Sunday hands-on workshop will be a deep dive into mushroom identification. We’ll organize into small groups and under Christian’s guidance\, we’ll practice systematically identifying mushrooms. Midday\, there will be a fun break introducing students to edible mushrooms. This will include an optional tasting of multiple species prepared in a variety of ways by local mushroom enthusiasts\, Lindsay Best\, Michelle Torres-Grant\, and Leonard Grant. The mushroom identification workshop will continue after the lunch break. Christian is a well-known expert in the field and author of ‘Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast’ and the newly released\, ‘Mushrooms of Cascadia’. And if you haven’t heard him before\, you’re in for a treat! \nOver the past two years\, the California Institute for Biodiversity has funded and supported the California Fungal Diversity Survey — a conservation-focused initiative to document fungi across the state with a very high level of systematic rigor. She has done extensive field work and research on seaweeds and has taught about them in school settings as well as in the field. She occasionally teaches seaweed cooking classes and is often found in the intertidal looking for her favorite specimens.

DESCRIPTION:Manzanita Mysteries: Evolution in Action on California’s Central Coast \nThis experience will start with a talk about manzanitas and then we’ll walk the Garden to examine the specimens that we have at the Garden. Dress appropriately for the weather and for an informative day! \n\nThe floral diversity of California is known around the world as one of a few “hot spots”. There are several plant families here that are in the midst of an evolutionary process\, hybridizing and creating new versions of themselves in real time.\nThe genus Arctostaphylos – manzanita\, has over 60 species\, of which all occur within the state of California.  The center of diversity for manzanita is thought to be California’s central coast between the San Francisco Bay Area and Santa Barbara County.\nThe range of variation within manzanitas will be discussed – the reason there are so many\, why they appear to colonize unique locations\, how to differentiate one from another and what the future may have in store.\n\n \nBio: Bill Waycott is co-owner/operator (along with his wife\, Diana) of Nipomo Native Seeds\, where they produce vegetable seeds\, along with CA native plants and seeds. Bill has a PhD in plant genetics from UC Santa Cruz/Davis and has worked throughout his career in agriculture. Bill’s involvement with native plants dates back to his childhood\, and over the years has promoted their use both through years of service with the California Native Plants Society and by donating native plants to non-profit organizations across California. Come and learn about this unique and important part of plants. \nA seed contains a miniature plant\, called an embryo\, that can develop into a fully grown plant. The outer shell\, or seed coat\, protects the embryo. Inside the seed a nutritious material provides food for the embryo. Briefly\, “A seed is a plant baby\, in a box\, with it’s lunch” – Thor Hanson. And… they’ve adapted to travel far and wide to spread young plants throughout nature. \nEducators Barb Renshaw\, Jeff Reifel\, and Faylla Chapman will be your guides to learn about how seeds travel through space and time. Then\, you’ll tour through the Display Garden looking for seeds in their own “boxes” or “space vehicles”. DESCRIPTION:This Nature Sunday is all about rattlesnakes and what we can learn from spying on them. This interesting and free program will be led by Owen Bachhuber from Cal Poly.  \nWhen we encounter rattlesnakes in nature\, they might rattle or slither away in fear. But what do they do when we’re not watching? Introducing Project RattleCam! \n🐍 RattleCam uses live stream cameras to investigate the social dynamics of rookeries where rattlesnakes gather to court mates\, give birth\, and tend to their young. This allows us to learn and share information about the endearing and dramatic lives of snakes.  \n🐍 Watching rattlesnakes behave calmly as they do without human disturbance is a powerful tool in changing people’s perceptions of these misunderstood reptiles.  \n🐍 Owen will share what Project RattleCam has learned about the snakes so far and will bring some slithery friends to assist. Come and meet them in person! \n           \nAbout your instructor: Owen Bachhuber is a master’s student studying Biological Sciences at Cal Poly. His research investigates the social behaviors of mother rattlesnakes as well as human perceptions of snakes. Before coming to Cal Poly\, Owen was a reptile keeper at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo and received his Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology from the University of Minnesota. \n

Meet the incredible lichen\, a fascinating symbiotic relationship between algae and fungi. The fungi provide shelter\, while the algae feed them through photosynthesis. He moved to San Luis Obispo County in 2019 to pursue an M.S. in Biological Sciences at Cal Poly\, completing it in February 2023 under the guidance of Professor Nishi Rajakaruna in the Geoecology Lab. Michael’s M.S. research focused on lichen communities of serpentine rocks and soils. \nPrior to this life in SLO\, Michael spent six years working as a biologist in the San Francisco Bay Area and more recently served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Panamá for two years. Now\, he works locally as a Biologist for Althouse and Meade\, Inc.\, continuing to plug away at lichen identification and community ecology research. When he’s not studying lichens\, Michael enjoys reading\, birding\, and being in the ocean. \nCome join us and delve into the captivating world of lichens with Michael Mulroy! \nThis event is perfect for adults and older kids who can stay engaged throughout the class. Don’t forget to bring your binoculars and hand lenses for a closer look at the lichens! Dress appropriately – bring water\, a sun hat\, and sunscreen if needed. \nWe can’t wait to see you there! 🌿
