SUMMARY:Nature Sunday: Seaweeds: Nature's Ocean Garden
DESCRIPTION:Seaweed: Nature’s Ocean Garden \nIn nature\, seaweeds can form forests or dainty gardens in a variety of shapes\, sizes and colors. Learn about them\, places they are found in the ocean and their multiple uses in a slide presentation and large display of fresh and preserved specimens. There will also be some taste testing of the various edible seaweeds and their products. \nFaylla Chapman is a marine biologist with a specialty in seaweeds. She has done extensive field work and research on seaweeds and has taught about them in school settings as well as in the field. She occasionally teaches seaweed cooking classes and is often found in the intertidal looking for her favorite specimens.

SUMMARY:Fungi of the Central Coast with Christian Schwarz
DESCRIPTION:The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden is excited to welcome Christian Schwarz back to the Garden! Christian is a well-known expert in the field and author of ‘Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast’ and the newly released\, ‘Mushrooms of Cascadia’. If you’ve heard Christian speak before\, you know he’s a fascinating and knowledgeable speaker. And if you haven’t heard him before\, you’re in for a treat! \nOver the past two years\, the California Institute for Biodiversity has funded and supported the California Fungal Diversity Survey — a conservation-focused initiative to document fungi across the state with a very high level of systematic rigor. During the course of this project\, non-professional collectors have generated a huge amount of information\, yielding fascinating new discoveries\, and suggesting areas for future research. Christian will provide an overview about what we’ve learned\, what we hope to learn\, and what the future holds for California’s fungi. \nSchedule for the evening: \n6:00 Doors Open\n6:30 Lecture Begins\n8:00 Book signing – there will be books for sale at the event or order ahead for yourself \nMember’s please enter: “memberten” for $10 off / membership will be verified \nStudents please enter: “studentten” for $10 off with photo ID at the door \nInstructor Christian Schwarz studied Ecology and Evolution at UC Santa Cruz\, where his interest in the world of fungi became irrevocable. Although he is passionate about ecology and biodiversity in general\, Christian is most well-known as a field mycologist. He has co-authored two field guides — Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast and the upcoming Mushrooms of Cascadia\, both with Noah Siegel. He primarily spends his time seeking\, photographing\, collecting\, teaching about\, and publishing research on North American macrofungi\, and has served on the IUCN Red List Working Group for North American Fungi. He is a research associate of the Ken Norris Center for Natural History at UC Santa Cruz\, where he teaches undergraduate courses in mycology and community science.

SUMMARY:Mushroom Discovery Two-Day Workshop: Exploration and Identification
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Mushroom Discovery series\, this hands-on and experiential learning program will happen over two days:\nSaturday\, February 8th from 10am to 4pm and Sunday\, February 9th 2025\, from 10am to 4pm.\nDoors open at 9:30 – please plan to arrive on-time for these two full days of learning. \nThe course will begin in the classroom with Christian teaching the basics of mushrooms and mushroom identification. Then the class will move outside through a portion of the SLO Botanical Garden. Tips and instructions on collecting mushrooms will be given. Participants will gather specimens for closer examination and discuss identification techniques and citizen science tools. This workshop will emphasize a dynamic sensory awareness of the mushrooms via close observation\, touching\, and smelling. \nThe Sunday hands-on workshop will be a deep dive into mushroom identification. We’ll organize into small groups and under Christian’s guidance\, we’ll practice systematically identifying mushrooms. Midday\, there will be a fun break introducing students to edible mushrooms. This will include an optional tasting of multiple species prepared in a variety of ways by local mushroom enthusiasts\, Lindsay Best\, Michelle Torres-Grant\, and Leonard Grant. The mushroom identification workshop will continue after the lunch break. Finally\, the course will end with time to ask questions. \nThe class size of this workshop is limited to a small size of 22 participants in order to ensure a high quality learning experience. \nRegister today to ensure your place as it will fill up! \nNote: There is a separate sign-up for the Monday Mushrooming Field trip and it’s only open to participants of this Two-Day Workshop. SUMMARY:Mushroom Discovery - Monday Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Mushroom Discovery series\, this Monday Field Trip is an opportunity ONLY for individuals who participated in the Saturday and Sunday workshops. You may also sign up if you’re an alumni of a previous Mushroom Discovery program at the SLO Botanical Garden. \nOn Monday\, Christian will lead us at offsite location to search for and identify mushrooms in their natural habitat. The location will be local and revealed closer to the day of the event\, as our instructor needs to find the ideal spot for a good variety of mushrooms. This will be a rain or shine event\, a fabulous experience\, and a great way to learn even more about fungi. \nPlease dress for the weather and bring your own lunch and water bottle. \nNote: Sign up for the Friday night lecture and the Mushroom Discovery Two-Day Workshop separately. Thanks. \nInstructor Christian Schwarz studied Ecology and Evolution at UC Santa Cruz\, where his interest in the world of fungi became irrevocable. SUMMARY:Single-Use Plastics 101
DESCRIPTION:This class is taught by SLO County Citizens’ Education. It’s ‘Single Use Plastics 101″ – for everyone. We’re also calling it ‘Trash Talk’\, because that’s where most of our plastics end up – in landfills. \nPlastic is choking our biosphere\, contaminating the food and water supplies of all living things\, and driving climate change. Media outlets are exploding with information and disinformation about plastic: how it is made; what happens to it after use; effects on our planet and on human health. The topic of plastic is extensive and our knowledge about the deleterious effects on human health expanding. \nThe focus of the 45-minute workshop\, Single Use Plastics 101\, is designed to inform and support consumers to reduce their single use plastic consumption. The workshop supports participants in understanding: \n\nWhy single use plastics are so harmful\nGreenwashing and recycling\nMicroplastics and microplastic pollution\nHealth effects from microplastics\nSingle use plastics and climate change\nWhat actions we all can take to reduce single use plastics\n\nParticipants will receive SLO County Citizens’ Climate Education informational documents to supplement their understanding and carry the message home. \nThis will be taught by Kathleen Bond of the SLO County Citizens’ Climate Education (CCE) organization\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. They’re a nonpartisan\, nonpolitical grassroots education and advocacy organization empowering people from diverse backgrounds to educate the public\, key stakeholders and policymakers to work for effective solutions to the climate emergency. \nFor more information\, see: Citizens Climate Education – Working to Preserve a Livable Planet \n \nPlease note: This class is FREE to members – please use code: member10off during registration

SUMMARY:Nature Sunday: All about Scat! - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:Scat – What’s that?! — CANCELLED \nNo\, it’s not music. It’s what’s in the kitty litter box and in the green doggie bag. It’s the droppings in your cupboard from mice or rats. It gives you some evidence that there’s a raccoon in your back yard at night. It’s poop! \nCome and learn all about scat: how to identify it\, who studies it and why\, and what it all means. Then quiz yourself on the identification of over 20 types of scat presented in the demonstration. Bears do it\, beetles do it\, even dinosaurs did it! There’s a lot to learn \nFaylla Chapman\, a docent at the Botanical Garden\, has studied scat for years with her students and the general public. She has collected many specimens and preserved them to be able to educate others on this important\, and often humorous\, topic
