SUMMARY:Nature Sunday: Ocean Drifters: The Good\, The Bad\, and The Ugly
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the microscopic life that is hidden beneath the waves and is crucial to all of life on Earth. We will explore the diversity of the marine plankton community\, what factors keep it in balance\, and the critical role it plays in ocean ecosystems. As a group\, we will be using a video microscope to view a living plankton net sample. Participants will also have an opportunity to see other specimens through individual microscopes set up around the room. \n \nKaren Watts has a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from UCSB and a Master’s degree in Science Education from Cal State East Bay. She began her career as a molecular biology researcher and then transitioned to a high school biology and biotechnology teacher. She was a California State Parks docent for 15 years\, working out of the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History\, where she specialized in educational programs for the general public on marine ecology and plankton. She is currently a field trip leader for Audubon and the Morro Bay Bird Festival.

SUMMARY:Nature Sunday: Native Bees in Neighborhoods and Parks of the CA Central Coast
DESCRIPTION:Native bees come in all sizes and colors. Just like us\, they are attracted to the mild climate and diverse flowers of the central California coast. Biologist Cindy Roessler will share colorful up-close photographs of our local native bees\, the flowers that attract them\, and where they nest. Then we’ll look for signs of native bees in the SLO Botanic Garden. \nNote: There are fewer native bees out in late August of a dry year\, however\, we will see many local plants in the botanic garden that attract native bees. We will not be talking about the European honey bee\, just the uniquely diverse native California bees. \nAs a professional ecologist\, Cindy has restored wildland parks to natural conditions for over 35 years and she’s recently become an amateur fanatic about native bees. She’s swung nets at the Elfin Forest\, Montańa de Oro State Park\, and Piedras Blancas Light Station for the California Bumble Bee Atlas. Since restoring her yard to native dune and coastal scrub habitats\, she now steps out her front door every day to go on native bee safaris. Her favorite native bees at the moment are the dancing leaf cutter bees and the aptly named fog belt bumble bee. \n \nPlease note: El Chorro Regional Park requires a $3 park entry fee on weekends and holidays. Having cash ready speeds up check in.

SUMMARY:Dabke ~ Building Community through Dance!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a family friendly cultural experience focused on the Dabke Dance\, a traditional Arab line dance from the Levantine region that combines rhythmic stomping and synchronized footwork. Dabke is practiced at weddings and community gatherings as a joyful expression of unity and cultural pride. The dance is deeply tied to the land and widely believed to have evolved from a mix of ancient agricultural rituals and community building practices- literally stomping mud and straw to make mud houses. Dabke dance is full of enthusiasm and energy bringing people together hand to hand and its people and land! \nInstructor Sandra Sarrouf M.A. is Faculty with Cal Poly Theatre and Dance and Director of Cultural Creations Collaborative. She advances work at the intersection of culture\, art\, and justice\, fostering learning and collaboration across differences. Passionate about cultural sustainability and informed by her lived experience as an Arab American woman\, Sandra weaves together her expertise as a DEI trainer\, facilitator and traditional artist to build community. Her radiant joy and deep cultural pride is most evident when she shares her heritage through dance\, music\, and community. \nClass will begin with a brief introduction by Rachel Alijilani\, co-architect of SLOBG’s Oak Glen Pavilion\, who will give a brief overview of the benefits of using natural building materials in architectural design. \nSLOBG Members – Enter Member5 for $5 off registration fee.

SUMMARY:Nature Sunday: Skullduggery
DESCRIPTION:A talk for those creepily curious about skulls and bones. What are they made of? What can we deduce from looking at a skull and its teeth? Do fish have skulls? Amphibians? Reptiles? Birds? Are those skulls really all that different from our own? This is a talk that will appeal to those who have ever looked at a skull\, or a collection of bones\, and thought “Hmm\, I wonder what that is?” \nMandy Ward is a microbiologist of considerable natural curiosity. Mandy trained in the biochemistry and molecular biology departments at Oxford and Berkeley\, respectively\, after getting her Ph.D. in Scotland. She worked as a member of staff at Stanford to gain experience in environmental engineering before taking a faculty position at Johns Hopkins University in the Geography and Environmental Engineering department. Retiring early after an incident with a train\, Mandy moved to the central coast where she has curated a skull and bone collection\, scoured local beaches for dead birds\, prepared skulls and other skeletal bits and pieces for exhibit\, given talks for LifeLong Learners and other groups\, and run a start-up company of no particular distinction. \n \nFree registration applies to participation with Nature Sunday topic and covers garden admission for the day. \nPlease note: El Chorro Regional Park requires a $3 park entry fee on weekends and holidays. Having cash ready speeds up check in.
