Nature Sunday: Owls in the Garden

November 22 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Free

November 22, 2026, 10 am – noon

Would you like to attract owls to your yard? Will they help you control rodents? Peggy Burhenn will talk about owls in SLO county and their habitat and behaviors.  Having knowledge of their habits increases the ability to find them in wild places. She will discuss how to create and maintain habitat for barn owls if you are interested in attracting them to your yard and will also discuss a trip to Serbia to see owls up close.

Following the presentation there will be a chance to dissect owl pellets from Peggy’s owl boxes to find out what they have been eating.

Peggy Burhenn is a Master Gardener and a certified California Naturalist. She oversees the native plant garden in the 7 Sisters Demonstration Garden and is a member of the California Native Plant Society and the Audubon Society. She supports wildlife on her property by planting native plants and setting up bat, bird, and owl boxes. As a Master Gardener she can be found working on the helpline or speaking about pollinators, birds, and native plants. She is a Xerces Society ambassador promoting conservation of invertebrates. She volunteers regularly at the Cal Poly herbarium, the Morro Bay Winter Bird Festival, and as a docent for the California State Parks, focusing her time at the monarch butterfly grove in Pismo Beach. She is the co-author of the book Pismo Monarchs: Magic, Myths & Mysteries. Basically, your average nature nerd who likes to eat well too.
